It rules! by Kristen

Really, it has everything I want in a yarn store:

  • lots of yarn
  • not overpriced
  • staff that offers help without hovering

It was great.

Tip 1: if you’re not really looking for this place, you’re going to pass right by it.

Tip 2: You don’t need to sign in with the guy behind the desk; just pass by and go to the elevators.

Tip 3: You need to be buzzed in (doorbell on the right) to get in the store.

School Products has a strange name and it’s on the third floor of an office building, but they’re actually a really great yarn store. They have whole walls dedicated to Karabella and Brown Sheep wool, and they also get in a lot of remnants and mill ends and other oddities, like baby yak wool. A lot of the really interesting yarn in my stash comes from this place, and they have good prices. I bought a sweater’s worth of silk yarn for $50 here, and I’ve also found delicious cashmere blends, wools cottons and silks. They also teach weaving and machine knitting classes and carry finer yarns in cones, including dyeable yarn. They don’t carry many patterns or novelty yarns, and they really only have one or two people on staff, so while they are helpful, they can easily get overwhelmed with questions. This isn’t the place to bring your friends who are just starting to knit, but it’s a great place to impress that out-of-town aunt of yours who taught you years ago…
