Sukhbaatar Square

This is the center of Ulaanbaatar; the center is actually designated with a symbol in the concrete. Sukhbaatar was a great leader for the Mongolians at the beginning of the communist era, if I recall correctly. The status itself is in the center of a large open square, with the government buildings around it and a theatre as well (I went to the theatre to see La Boheme – interesting to see an opera in Mongolia!).

This is “ground zero” UB.

I heard that the remains of Sukhbaatar and Choibalsan were removed from the mausoleum on the square and transported to their respective home towns.
