The crown jewel at Battleship Cove is, of course, the USS Massachusetts. She was a South Dakota class battle ship which served in World War II. She was the first US ship to fire against the axis powers in anger in 1942, and in 1945 fired the last 16 inch shells in the war. Today she is the official Massachusetts’ memorial to those who gave their lives in WWII.
