Globe Cafe And Bakery

The Globe is being sold/closing.

This makes me more sad than just about anything else closing. The food here and atmosphere was unmatched anywhere.

As a meat and potatoes man, I’m half the vegetarian a lot of people are. So, despite hearing good things about the place, I’d never visited the Globe until this week. Patchouli was not wafting through the rafters. Bean curd was not oozing from the floor. Noodley Jam bands were not blaring from a boombox. The Globe was a pleasant surprise in every way, most especially the food. I enjoyed a filling and delicious meal and earned a newfound respect for the digestive qualities of abrasive, experimental, not-even-vaguely-hippie music.

Especially with lots of spices and vegetables, salsa, guacamole, and crusty homemade whole wheat bread.

But grits aren’t as good without cheese…

I suggest the TLT sandwich (tempeh, lettuce, tomato). It comes with a cup of soup. It’s delicious.

I know, I know … I’m supposed to hate on this place because it’s all Vegan and sometimes they ignore you when it’s time to take your order. But today I had a well-rounded experience where the folks took my order (no kidding!) and the cook, I have to say, knocked it out of the park. Good stuff.

I like the insides of this joint. The music is almost always louder and more obtuse than 5 alarm vegan hot wings. Go Globe!

The food was delicious and all vegan. They were playing Belle and Sebastian loudly…I instantly fell in love.

• Now the service has never been bad here at all, but I’ve noticed that the folks working here have certainly become even nicer and more affable than ever before recently (allowing for occasional off days.) They’ve gone from nice to extra special nice.

• The braised tofu fajitas are addictive, as are the humongous corn-meal based blueberry pancakes. But I swear… six of us ordered one of these pancakes to share with our main meals. Could barely be finished.

• The Globe folks have the strangest and hence best taste in dining music ever.

It helps that I’m seeing more of my friends here every Sunday. For this and other reasons, despite being far more out of the way from where I live, I found my new regular Sunday brunch place.

Try thier vegan gyro!!! And their cinnamon rolls!!! They also serve beer and wine. All to really loud music.

One of the few reasons I lament not living in Capitol Hill.

This isn’t a complaint at all, just a funny observation, but—without fail—whenever I enter The Globe, everyone inside the restaurant turns around, stops their conversations, and stares at me for half a second, then resume their conversations. The Globe has certainly attracted a very regular, tight-knit community of regulars that I guess the diners expect anyone walking in to be a Norm, so to speak. :)

Also, those biscuits and almond gravy will fill you up for an entire day. Even more so, the tofu scramble.

I had the tofu scramble, a cinnamon roll, and an apple juice. I got the cinnamon roll immediately, and it was great. I don’t even usually like cinnamon rolls, but this one was particularly good. The apple juice tasted a little funky, but that may have just been because it was paired with the much sweeter cinnamon roll. The tofu scramble wasn’t very good, if only because there was too much of some seasoning I couldn’t identify in it. Once I put it in a tortilla with salsa and avocado it was decent. My friend got the biscuits and gravy and some kind of flapjack. His flapjack was just okay, but the biscuits with mushroom gravy were very good. The server I spoke to seemed really friendly. There’s free two hour parking along the street (free all day on Sundays). Although not everything I tried was great, I’d go back.
