Worth visiting!
As Chevy Chase once said...
“It’s only the biggest @$*#% hole in the world!”
Kennecott Copper Mine is indeed very deep. Visitors are welcome at the observation center at the rim of the mine. There is always a lot of activity going on. Ore is being constantly hauled out in giant trucks. Years ago, the ore was hauled out by rail. I think that it became too expensive to keep moving the train tracks continually as they scooped the ore out.
It’s fasinating to see. The size is of the pit and the equipment used there is unbelievable.
The vistors’ center has some great interpretive displays as well.

Kennecott Copper Mine
Check it out, this is a pit mine right in the SLC Valley. The pit is so deep you can fit two of the chrysler buildings on top of each other in this pit.
A border town called Copperton (where the miners originally lived) is close to getting covered up by the mines tailings. I think they will stop before they do but you can go to Copperton and get some great Antique stuff from the mining days.
The mine does a blast daily at 11AM (worth seeing). They literally blow up part of the mountain.
While you are here you can also view the tires of one of the massive trucks, watch an informative video about the mine, and buy cool stuff.
There is a charge ($5 per car) to see the mine. Totally worth the trip.
