Why I recommend this place to visitors  — 1 year ago

Worth visiting!

My husband and I went on a polar bear safari in Churchill. We flew into Winnipeg from Houston and took the 3 hour flight directly into Churchill. It was unbelievable to see polar bears in their natural environment, although quite different to photograph white on white. I would highly recommend this if you like animals and photography. Keep in mind…Churchill is a very small and remote town so don’t expect to dine at nice restaurants or enjoy the nightlife. We were only there about 4 days just to see the bears, take pictures, and go dog sledding.

Polar Bear sightseeing trip at Churchill  — 2 years ago

Worth visiting!

This was absolutely amazing. Flew to Winnipeg, then took a lazy three day train trip north to Churchill. Some might say why not just fly there direct, but I liked the laid back atmosphere, meet the others on the tour, see some rugged scenery on the way there and generally chill. Once there, very cold as expected! Suggest you bring or hire heavy parkas for the trips out on the tundra buggies. I think we got fairly lucky with what we saw on our two trips out. There is an element of luck, others saw more, but we saw enough. Be prepared for quite a lot of waiting around though. When the bears did finally come right close up to the buggies and you see them nonchalantly walking by, its a great sight. We also had a mum and two cubs in tow. A once in a lifetime experience.

[edit] because of climate change, the timings of when the ice forms and the bears move out onto the ice changes, may be different from when I went two in 2004. You need to liaise with the locals or tour company to find out the best times. Also, DO THIS before the natural habitat is detroyed completely by global warming and the bears disappear. :-(
