Cathedral Of St. John The Divine

i used to come here during freshmen year, not during a mass or anything, but just to collect my thoughts. it’s no doubt an imposing and hauntingly beautiful place. truly gothic, plus it’s always under construction all 4 years that I was at columbia.

The first thing I learned about the Cathedral is that they had a fire in 2001, and much of the interior is closed off for renovation. I was a little disappointed, as the entire Nave is covered with gray plywood. Given the lack of funds in the church, it is not known how long it will be under renovation.

There are more interesting cathedrals to see, and also more interesting places in NYC to visit.

The cathedral has the largest sanctuary in the world. It’s larger than St. Peter’s Basilica’s in the Vatican, and its beautiful. Especially all the little sanctuaries. You can walk through and check it out for a small donation, or even go to a service.
