Museum Of Sex

It’s small and overpriced. I didn’t find anything too impressive. After all there’s not much on display there that can’t been seen on internet.

I have been to this museum twice so far, and although I have had a very good time both times, it may not be for everyone. It is certainly expensive for the size of the exhibitions and although it is the displays are about sex, they are not neccessarily sexy.

The first time I went was fairly recently after it had opened that the main event was the history of sex laws in NYC. I loved it! As a NYC buff, it was neat to see the 19th Century artifacts of guides to slumming for gentlemen, the paperwork regarding obscenity cases, burlesque and peep-show photos, and maps showing the locations of historical houses of ill-repute.

The second time I went there were a few small exhibits covering things like the history of the film “Deep Throat,” a pin-up room, and a large section on foot-binding in China. I found the foot-binding fascinating, especially the video interviews with women who were from the last generation of that practice and a preserved foot. However, a woman I had gone with was simultaneously bored/grossed out.

If you’re thinking of going, you might want to call ahead first to see whether the current exhibitions appeal to you.

Next time I’m bringing money and i’m going there.

I’m halfway towards my goal.

I mean, I guess size DOES matter… when it coes to the size of this museum, anyway. I dont know if it was being expanded while I was there, or if they’ve expanded it since, but when I went, the exhibit was a lot smaller than I had anticipated. The Museum of Sex in Barcelona had a lot more artifacts and displays to look at and it was a much smaller space.

The museum gift shop is great, though!
