This is a very nice castle. It is restored. Although we didn’t go into the paying part which is inside certain parts of the castle.

If I remember correctly there is an ENORMOUS keg in one of the rooms off of a large hall. And when I say enormous, well, there are stairs that go up the side and back to a platform and then on the other side they lead back down. There are tours that they give, but my aunt & uncle took us through. I think it holds something like .25 million litres.

The nice thing is that when you are out on the terrace it looks over the Neckar river.

Going there and coming back there are plenty of steep hills. We had swollen feet from travelling and acclimatizing, so you may want to ensure you take the bus up to the castle as there is little parking right by the castle itself.

The Heidelberger Schloß by esda

I visited this place twice in short succession (April 2007 and June 2007). The first time was, when I was visiting my friend Sigrid (who’s living in Heidelberg), the second time was with because of our annual works outing – and this years trip led us to Heidelberg. lol

The first time I’ve visited the Schloß, I got to see the garden of that gigantic castle ruin (which is a really intact “ruin” and really shouldn’t go by that name ;)), the second time I got to the inside of the castle and the “Apotheken Museum” (apothecary museum).

All is totally worth seeing. But what impressed me, personally, most, was the size of this castle, the castle garden (which is ideal to walk around or sit down and relax) and the beautiful view you’ve got from up there (from the castle and the garden): you can see the whole town Heidelberg, the surrounding “mountains” (or rather “hills”) and the river Neckar.

I took the train down from Frankfurt to meet my brother, who was visiting me. At the time I worked in Eschborn (a suburb of Frankfurt) and while I was working he went to Heidelberg. When I met up with him, he told me a story of how he went into a Loewenbrau (“Lervenbroy” not “Lowenbrow”) pub and tried to order a schnitzel. The waitress didn’t understand him, so he had about 2 liters of beer waiting for her to bring him his Schnitzel. After a while, he was wondering what was going on because she never came to check on him (something very German, wait staff doesn’t come to you like they do in America. They let you chill there and you have to ask them to come over for something. You’ll sit there all day waiting for the check if you don’t ask for it.). Finally, he asked, “where’s my schnitzel?” “You didn’t order one.” “Yes I did!” “Oh, I am sorry, I must have not understood you.” “Forget it… I’m kinda toasty now and I need some fresh air.” Haha! What a fantastic time in Heidelberg.

It is indeed a wonderful place to visit with a very quaint, cute old center. Certainly go up and visit the Schloss because it’s very pretty, and it’s got some great views of the city. Then walk back down to the city center and grab an ice cream.

It was awesome to tour an actual castle. Winery in the basement was pretty darn good too…from what I can remember! lol
