On the roads: The Westfjords-circle is some 700 km (435 miles) to and from highway 1 and 1066 km (some 662 miles) if you come from and go to Reykjavík.

Despite intensive road construction the roads in the Vestfjords are in part gravel and are quite scary in places. One should always watch ones speed and heed the advice of signs. For example there are blue signs which advice on speed for turns and other tough spots. Not following this advice is only recommended to those who have a rather loose attachment to their lives..

Given these conditions I would recommend calculating a couple of days for a Vestfjords trip.

I also urge you to go despite them.. they’ll only add to the adventure ;)

- It’s a great place !

And this you can compare with the general map, showing the what are considered the main roads and what not. Distances between places can then be found here… ~

Crazy place by Teitur

This quadrant is simply amazing. From our recent trip I have to say that everything was a pleasure. The fjords were beautiful, the highlands magical and the towns were nice. On top of that the roads themselves were cool and in the more desolate places really added to the feeling you were getting a glimpse of what Iceland used to be like. The little lambs running all around were sweet too :)

It’s a large and varied area which offers a surprise at every turn. I definitely recommend it.

It’s one of the most beautiful places in Iceland and I’ve only been to the southern shores of it. The steep mountains touching the sea and their jagged tops reaching for the skies call for me.

I’ll have to go there soon, both to drive around and to spend some time there hiking.
