Altai Mountains

Tsetserleg is at the base of the Altai Mountains, so we were able to pick up a few commodities before going to our ger camp. Karkhorum is also near the Altai Mountains, a town near Erdene Zuu. I remember visiting the large temple in Tsetserleg and climbing the bare rock mountain to touch the red buddha painted near the top. The Russians attempted to blast it out of the rock but were unsuccessful. I made it to the red buddha, but the last twenty feet were too steep to attempt without a safety harness. As it was, it was extremely dangerous to do, and I am glad I wore my good walking shoes that day. The Altai Mountains themselves were beautiful and peaceful. The closest to the skies I have ever been.
