South Point

South Point is a great place to put your 4-Wheel Drive through some paces and still keep it in 2 wheel drive. The only real requirement is ground clearance.

If you are on the Big Island and you are in the mood to go spear fishing this is where I would recommend going. Of course there are many places just as nice, but if you are visiting and you want to cross more then one activity off of your list – HELLO!!

At South Point you can; free dive, 4 wheel, see big waves, see big wind, go fishing, see horse ranches, see government energy waste, visit with ranchers, and generally have a good time. The black sand beaches are only a few miles away as well. Of course if you are up for a hike you can see some of them here as well as go to Green Sands.

Here is a photo taken from the cliifs down at South Point. Normally, the wind blows out to sea and the waters are calm and flat. People jump off the cliffs and climb back up on metal ladders bolted to the side of the cliff. On this day, the wind was blowing in from the ocean and the waves were cresting over the cliffs, from 50 ft below!
