A Great Drive by David Soul
National Geographic Traveler has called this "one of America’s grandest, most spectacular drives.
I’m particulary patial to the northern part of the route (The North Cascade Highway) but it closes from early November through to the spring (exact dates vary year to year) as it is impossible to keep open due to snow and avalanche hazard).
The entire loop is about 400 miles — it circles through the heart of the stater, crossing the Cascade Mountains into the high desert climate of the Columbia River Valley. But it is possible to do just chunks of it as day trips depending on what else you are planning to see in Washington
No matter how you do it, along the way not only is their incredible scenery,(inlcuding National Parks) mountains, rivers and farmland but also quaint towns to stop and enjoy.
