Underground

My parents, my brother, and i ended up here while we were in Atlanta… we walked through the main area and then made a b-line straight back to the parking garage…

it was pretty bad, but I heard its cleaned up a lot. It was really great back in the days of my chilhood. I thought it was the coolest place I would ever go (17 years ago)

Dangrous! Was followed around by people begging for money; they demanded to know WHY I wasn’t giving them any. They followed us to the bathroom and waited for us to come out! Would never go again and I mean it!

This was the first place my wife and I visited in Atlanta. The people running the food stalls were overbearing, the place was filthy, and I witnessed a drug deal in the bathrooms.
Really not my first choice for things to do in Atlanta, but it is right next to several worthwhile attractions; mainly the World of Coke Museum, and the Atlanta Aquarium.

It is just some crappy shops that are ouverpriced. You get the tourist. There is also the gangster element that hangs out hee.

I am at underground almost every day. Personally its not the most exciting place unless you have nothing to do and you are of driking age. During the summer if your in you teens it is a good place to meet people, that is if you like them slutty and ghetto. Really it is a good place to people watch, and if there is an event going on there it is an interestig place to be. Otherwise the place has a real urban atmostphere, that is kinda cool I guess.

Nothing can equal the first Underground. It was spontaneous, unexpected places to eat, party, shop. The official revival turned it into a “mall” then came the kiosks and fewer shops. However, the dollar store, African Pride, and Wolff Camera hanging in there, with Micks upstairs and down for food and the food court are still staples worth visiting. It hums with tourists on weekends and holidays and is still unique, an important part of Atlanta.

What shoppers do not realize, as it is cut off from surrounding shops, is that there are interesting shops with good values surronding Underground itself.

Every few years, someone gets a bug to “revitalize” Underground and it becomes Disney-fied for a while. Then it goes to hell again, with gangs and violence a constant threat.

I have lived in some pretty bad neighborhoods (one of them nicknamed “the war zone” because of the gang violence), but I’m not comfortable going to Underground anymore.

VERY busy place when I was invited to go with friends at lunchtime. Unique and yet somehow reminded me of Bayside down in Miami..
