Even though I live in the upper part of Washington Heights, I find I come here at least twice a week. Quite honestly, after several years of suburban supermarket produce, I’d forgotten what real fruit and vegetables are like—grown for their taste, not for long-haul transit and shelf life.

Just in the past month, I have eaten currants (red and black both), heirloom tomatoes, sugar plums—and I’ve only barely touched the surface of what’s available there.

The Greenmarket is there on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 8am to 6pm.

I think the pretzels are a little overrated, but nothing beats grape and apple cider on a cool spring morning.

wonderful! especially really early on the weekends when things are fresh and there is less people!

This is a great place to shop for produce, flowers and speciality items, especially on Saturday when the most vendors are there. It’s a touch of ‘country’ in Union Square.
