The Boscastle Floods 2004
Heavy storms on the afternoon of Monday 16th August 2004 caused 2 inches of rain to fall in two hours onto the hills above Boscastle. Boscastle stands in a deep coomb where two valleys meet, formed by the rivers Valency and Jordan. A third river, Paradise, also flows through the village. The heavy rain caused the level of these normally benign rivers to rapidly rise and race into the village and overflow the banks. In places, so much water flowed down streets that roads came up and were broken. Huge trees lying in the street were washed into the river and around six buildings collapsed due to the force of the water, and an estimated 50 cars were swept into the sea.
Seven rescue helicopters were scrambled to winch people stranded on rooftops and in cars to safety, up to 1,000 people had to be evacuated.
The floods came 52 years, almost to the day, after floods swept through Lynmouth, in Devon, killing 34 people.
