Why I recommend this place to visitors
All the Germans I met in Meissen and Dresden were absolutely in love with the Church of Our Lady. To them, and to others, it’s an amazing symbol of rebirth from war and of reconciliation between former enemies. The Frauenkirche was destroying in the firebombing of Dresden in 1945 and remained a pile of rubble in the middle of the city for over 50 years. International funds allowed the church to be rebuilt. There are black stones blemishing the white exterior in several areas; these are the original stones from the church, blacked by age and fire and meticulously placed in their proper order. Inside the church, a twisted, warped cross is placed delicately to the side; this is the original cross that sat upon the top of the destroyed Frauenkirche. It is amazing to see.
