Wallace

I have a picture from a famous artist that has seen ‘the center of the Universe’ there. I just want to see the sign. lol. I was there when they did Dante’s peek too and it was crazy to see all the buildings and cars covered in ash.

Most of the movie “Dante’s Peak” was filmed here, and in return the filmmakers paid for the freeway overpass for the town.

There are mine tours, cute stores, historic buildings, decent food, and best of all, a brothel turned museum.

It’s an old mining town. When I first started driving through here enroute to the west coast, we found that you would drive slowly through, turn right, down the block, turn left, out of town. The town begged to be stopped at and visited, but I never knew where I could park a big truck. Some day I want to drive a car there, so I can stop and visit.

The last time I went there, I passed over the town. WHY? Because they had built a road literally OVER the town, so truckers could just fly by. If you want to visit, you can take the exit now. I miss driving through the old town, but I plan to go visit some day. Maybe get a shirt, as my husband’s name is Wallace! LOL

If you are passing through Idaho, it is worth stopping here. It has been a while, so I am hoping I am getting the town correct, but it has a bordello museum which has been left exactly as found (cigarette butts still in ashtray) after the hookers left in a hurry…. There are some kitschy old motel signs and a place to get a really good hamburger…

interesting little town, lots of mining history, and some cool old buildings, I imagine in its hey-day when teh mining industry was booming it was a busy place, but now it seems kind of depressed. Lots of “antique” shops (ie, second hand shops). Lots of interesting looking bars and taverns.

I was passing through on the way to Montana for Christmas and spent the night in Wallace hoping to ski at Lookout Pass but it was 35 and raining so I didn’t ski.
