Mount Roberts Tramway

The terminus of the Mount Roberts Tramway is right next to where the cruise ships come in. From that spot it goes about 1800 feet straight up the side of the mountain. Although I generally do not do well in high places, this is definitely worth the trip.

It is a bit of a white knuckle ride if heights are not your thing. But after getting to the top and putting my feet on solid ground my perspective changed dramatically. From the top you have a commanding view of most of the city and the nearby fjords. The sensation felt when looking out at the surrounding area is difficult to describe.

At the top of the lift there is a nature center and a network of trails. When I went up there with Mrs. viii it was foggy and raining most of the time. We had brought our umbrellas and decided to brave one of the shorter trails. It was definitely worth the effort. The area was definitely verdant beyond all belief. In addition to the spruce trees which grew abundantly there were all sorts of wildflowers and other vegetation to be seen.

From time to time the fog would briefly lift, just enough for us to glimpse a view of our cruise ship far below and the city’s harbor in which it sat.

The Mount Roberts Tramway was definitely worth the price of admission. We had to pay $24.95 per person, but the ticket was good for as many rides up and down the mountain as you cared to take all day long.

Take the hiking trail up, its much more enjoyable.

A great way for tourists to see the best of Juneau in a relatively short amount of time. Great photo ops.

Once you get up top and check out the visitors center and meet Cessna the eagle, there’s lots of nice trails and great views to be had. Plus if you’re willing you can catch up to a snowfield almost all year it seems!

If your in Juneau, then ride the tram. Absolutely breathtaking! Warning, if you’re afraid of heights, you probably don’t want to do this.
