Mauthausen

I believe Mauthausen is the only Nazi concentration camp still standing in Austria. It is said to rival Auschwitz-Birkenau in the severity of suffering, as it was intended as a labor camp, while Auschwitz was primarily an extermination camp.
Take the time to walk down the steps into the rock quarry. These steps are narrow today, but were even narrower during the Holocaust. (The steps were widened following World War II to better accomodate tourists.) It is incredible to imagine hundreds of emaciated people climbing these cramped, steep steps with huge stones on their backs.
