Living in the Heart of Missouri by collector of junk
Marshall is typical of other cities of similar size. As a resident, I can tell you it has changed over the years.
We have a 4 lane highway Route 65 running north to south with new businesses popping up along it, but our downtown is still alive and kicking. You can drive around the square, visit a couple antique shops and some other downtown stores, tour the Jim the Wonder Dog Memorial Park, and even eat at the China Inn or at Evelyn’s Restaurant if you desire a nice sit down meal. Otherwise, you can stop at the fastfood joints.
If you want to visit Marshall, the best times is during one of the city’s festivals: the Sante Fe Trail Days in the summer or the Missouri State Cornhusking Festival in October. Like many towns, Marshall holds a festival for the locals and visitors alike. Small town festivals generally include:
classic car shows
baby contests
craft shows and flea markets
carnival rides for the kiddies
tractor pulls
parades
corndogs, funnel cakes and kettle corn
beer gardens
Most of the surrouding communities around Marshall have similar festivals in the summer or fall. I guess it is the result of the German heritage of many of the original settlers.
