Well, where I live is very heavily populated by African and Asian people. So my pale skin is a minority. It’s much better than living in some of the other Housing Commission estates where the majority are white people who mostly have drug or attitude problems. The people in my area are mostly very quiet and good mannered, friendly even. They’re mostly families, working to make a better life for their children. I like that.
We even have playgrounds where we can hang out with the kids on a sunny day. The laundry is problematic and I have learned to never ever hang my washing out on the line. Cos if I do, it gets stolen. I’ve become very creative with hanging my washing inside.
Ascot Vale has lots of nice little cafes and pizza joints along Union Road, where you can hang out and relax with your mates. Insomniacs bar is a pretty cool place to hang out at night. The fruit shop is great, but the supermarket is tiny and overpriced. Better to do your shopping in a nearby suburb such as Newmarket or Moonee Ponds. Every few months or so the Stitches club comes to our estate to entertain the kids, give them free food, prizes and rides, and to teach them to say no to drugs, alcohol and violence. Even the mums get little pressies every now and then.
Ascot Vale is near to lots of different forms of public transport, so not having a car is not too much of a hardship over here.
