Home of Kenule Saro-Wiwa
Because of an abundance of oil in Ogoni, Shell drilled extensively for several decades in the region, polluting the air and water and devastating ecosystems in the area, all without sharing their massive profits with the people actually living on the land. Ken Saro-Wiwa, an Ogoni writer, and MOSOP, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogongi People, fought against what they saw as a war on their people by Shell and the Nigerian government. In 1993, Shell finally acquiesced and left the region, but left behind much of its infrastructure in case the possibility of drilling ever arose again. Saro-Wiwa was arrested with eight others the following year and imprisoned without charge for 10 months before being accused of murdering four Ogoni chiefs (an impossibility, since he was several kilometres away when they were killed) and executed. I would love to go and meet the Ogoni people, listen to their stories, and see how this region has changed since Shell has left (although as we can see, they still have their fingers in several Nigerian pies).
