I was last on Captiva about two weeks before the hurricane hit, and I’m kind of afraid to go back, although I’ve heard it’s recovering. It is BEAUTIFUL here- I was lucky enough to go shark fishing once with some people I had met that day, and that was some of the most fun I’ve ever had. There are also tons of dolphins. It’s pretty interesting to go sit by Red Fish Pass because you are sure to see them hanging around the fishing boats, begging. My grandmother is a docent on Captiva Cruises- they do a dolphin cruise that is really neat because the dolphins will come right up and ride the boat’s wake. When I was there it was also possible to kayak over to North Captiva, which was really beautiful, but was also where the eye hit so I’m not sure how it would be now.
All in all- not super exciting. Don’t expect a lot to be going on. But DO expect to see lots of beautiful wildlife, and do go on all of the nature tours that you can. They are worth it.
