A tip I have about this place  — 8 months ago

    Worth visiting!

The bugs are bad in the summer. To enjoy yourself to the utmost and experience all the island has to offer to you, be sure to visit early or late in the season to make the most of it.

Hiking with my dad  — 9 months ago

    Worth visiting!

Many years ago when I was about 15, my mom and dad and I took a ferry across to the island. Mom was content to sit in the lodge, enjoy the atmosphere, and people watch . . . her legs wouldn’t allow her to walk far.
My dad and I took off down a short trail toward the end of a peninsula. Nice path, beautiful day, sun coming down through lots of leafy branches.
We stopped for some reason, not sure why. Maybe a noise off to our left.
We looked up into the trees and there about 10 feet off the path was a HUGE MOOSE with BIG antlers!!!! He was enormous. Wow.
We just stood there looking at him for a little bit while he looked down at us. Then we very quietly and peacefully walked on down the path so we wouldn’t spook him.
It was amazing. An outstanding memory.

Bring a sleeping bag liner and wool hat for August. Listen to the wolves, marvel at the Northern Lights over Thunder Bay, do the antler dance and stay away from the rutting bulmoose.

    Questions about this place

    St. Paul
fidgiegirl asks, “What is the best hiking route for first-time visitors? We are experienced campers (Boundary Waters) but not so much hikers. We plan to spend 4-5 nights on the island. We are open to where we would start and end.”
