Why I recommend this place to visitors

“Largest in the world public display of mounted crabs from around the globe”, of course. Private collections of mounted crabs is an entierly different subject.

Four days of diving.....

We started our trip in Belize in Ambergris, the food and people are great. There are dive sites as close as 10minutes and as far as two hours. It was a great start to a wonderful vacation. I ate so much fresh shrimp, I’m suprised I didn’t turn into one.

The last time I went to this place

Intro:
I traveled alone here (2001) to get away from everything and to re-evaluate my life and figure out what the hell i’m going to do with the rest of it. I told noone and disconnected. Where else but to get away from everything and fulfill my dream of being a beach bum for an extended period of time. I was here about 2 months.

Costs:
I spent about 500 for the plane tickets (Priceline.com). I stayed at… i forgert the name, but it’s gone anyway now. Something Sports Lodge. I rented a 1 bdrm 2 room apartment about 2 minutes stroll off the beach. I payed $550 USD with tax for the month. ($18 a day). That’s a steal really, considering what the surrounding resorts cost ($30 and up). The currency ratio is 1 USD to 2 Belize Dollar.

What to expect:
I expected crime and so and so. Not the case. It was a sleepy fishing town, with plenty of bars and clubs. The locals are friendly and speak English. And an unexpected surprise is that the sand does not get hot EVER. It’s mainly crushed coral and it stays cool and is very close to white.

Tips:
If you’re going to be staying somewhere an extended period of time, don’t do what i did. I blew most of my money eating out. There is a nice Supermarket in town. I lived off Pasta and Icetea. Rent a bicycle. Get to know the staff of where you’re staying for help in getting a good price on the green stuff. Bring s few good books. Stick to the manicured beaches, the others are nice but you will sink in the smushy sand and get tangled in the seaweed. This was annoying, but that’s nature. A unpleasent reality i realized, but the maintained beaches were amazing. Also, there is no hard waves coming in, the coral reef calms the waters down resulting in cystal clear water. You can see the bottom clear as day well over 15 feet deep and further. I didnt go over this cuz i’m not the best swimmer. Bring a good pair of Snorkles. Bring those glove-like sandles unless you’re used to hard sharp things in the shallow water.

Better Tips:
Smoke up, it’s damn cheap. I’d smoke Fat Bob Marley Size Full Cigars of the stuff nightly. Oh, and bring Rolling paper, or a Pipe. As you will not find these here. They are not sold. Use Coconut hairs as filters. When it’s a full moon stay up all night. It’s damn gorgeous. The moon totally lights up everything. Lay out on the Piers and enjoy the cool island Breeze. Meet someone early and have fun all over the island. :) Don’t make trouble, remember you are totally disconnected from civilization. Bring an Ipod for enjoyable music. The local beer is Belikin. It will do the job. Hope you can dance to reggea cuz that’s what you’ll hear, that and hiphop. Once you’re there you’ll notice that there is one club that’s the place to be every night. So get to know the routine.

The Rest:
The best beach is off of Ramon’s Village. There is an amazing Pizzaria stand south on the island. Best Pizza i’ve ever had amazingly. I only took about 15 pictures while there. They really dont live up to the reality. I knew this beforehand.

Great Diving

Did my first open water dive here. It was awesome. Stayed at Ramon’s Village. Really friendly people. It was nice to have everything right there and it was a lazy 5 minute walk to the center of town.
