It’s a place to visit only because there are so many museums. Local NYers know it as the most pretentious area of the city. It’s for people who like to spend money just to show they have it to spend.

since i see the met and guggenheim are here.
last night i went to my friend’s place in the 100s, like 5 blocks from harlem, and it’s quite a different place to the museumy bit.
this was after the big dump oh hail/snow, so i was kind of wading up to my knees. we went to an irish pub the night before st. patrick’s day, met some interesting guys, all of them with wedding rings sigh the singer was good
felt like a real neighbourhood.
and my friend is a good cook too :D

It was fun going back and seeing the place my grandparents and dad lived. I met the person who now owns the building, and has turned it into a single family residence. Before it was artist workspaces, and before that, apartments, and way before it was a livery stable. I got some great pictures, and was able to tell the new owner about the woman who tried to commit suicide in the apartment next door, and send him the article where my grandfather was quoted after trying to save her. The building definitely has some history!

It’s where I live now, I feel so lucky to be on the ground floor with a private back yard, My dog is probably one of the luckiest in Manhattan, since private yards are rare here.I am no longer visited by cats since they don’t find my fox terrier fun to play with.Squirrels are abundant in the maple and oak trees that border the brick perimeter walls, I observed morning doves nesting this summer and was pleased when I saw chipmunks doing what ever it is they do, I wish they’d come more often, but I don’t imagine they are common inhabitants of Manhattan. I observed an insect type creature when removing an old rotting wooden cable spool from the yard that looked like a cross between a centipede, scorpion, lion fish and alien life form that I still keep my eyes open for these UFO’s (Unidentified Forbidding oddities)I displaced an entire community , but have no idea where they relocated to. I just hope they are forgiving. The earth is rich with large worms and assorted earth dwelling critters, this is good, otherwise the ground would rot, this spring will be my second attempt at producing a lawn from seed, once I get the hang of gardening in this region , I’ll attempt to create a habitat for the local “wildlife” That still dwells silently and unnoticed by the towering high rises here on Manhattans Upper East Side

“The two-square mile neighborhood, once known as the ‘Silk Stocking District’, has some of the most expensive real estate in the United States. Until the railroad cut was covered, about 1910, the stylish part of the Upper East Side with mansions and townhouses lay towards the park, generally speaking, while the area east of Lexington Avenue was a blue-collar district that included stables and breweries. A long high bluff fronting the river north of Beekman Place was dotted with fine suburban villas in the nineteenth century, the last remaining one being Gracie Mansion, now home of New York’s mayors.”

It was a great place to visit – easy to get to (taking train in or driving), not too bad to find parking if you happened to drive in and then the rest of the city was so accessible – walkimg or public transportation. Very close to the tourist action and great bar and restaurant choices within minutes.
