My hometown by tricia

I grew up here—and while it’s definitely a small town, it does have its charm. I can ride my bike around my neighborhood and see cows, horses, goats, chickens and ponies. A guy up the street grows his own vegetables and sells them in a stand right by his house. The stand operates on an honor system—you put money in a box and take what you need.

The best restaurants in town are Chicken Time and Goodfellas. Everyone goes nuts about Belleview Pizza, but I think Goodfellas is much better.

Belleview, a whistle-stop on the way to slowCala by flankleft

Belleview is a small town on highway 441 south of Ocala. Mainly it’s worth visiting for the food and swap meet. Not much happens here but here are the highlights.

Liquor stores are open 7 days a week, you’re going to need it if you live here.

It has a really good cuban/puerto rican food restraunt called “Chicken Time” on hwy 441 next to the save-a-lot store. Order albondigas, a spicy cuban meatball sandwich in hard bread that is to die for. There is also a really good Pizzeria called “Belleview Pizza” or somesuch on 441 a mile south that has calzones 14-17inches long and are very yummy. The “pasta faire” restraunt has half price drinks, Martinis $2.25, during happy hour 11-6pm weekdays.

Lassies, on 441 is open 24 hours and is okay, standard Sysco food but fine nonetheless. Waffle house is also open on the southside of Belleview but I swear that their menu has less selections than the normal waffle house menu.

A bit south of Belleview is the weekend swap meet called the Market of Marion and it is jammed packed with cheap stuff you can’t live without.

A bit north of Belleview, maybe a mile, is a new gay bar called The Twilight Zone. They currently have drag shows at 11pm fridays and saturdays door $5. Good music and fun entertainment.

Heading west on 25 or is it 27, there is a hole in the wall pool hall that is pretty cool, I think it’s called dicks place.

5-7 miles west of Belleview is a little town called Ocklawaha and on lake Ocklawaha is a great tiki restraunt called “Gator Joes” You can go swimming off the pier, there is a sandy beach, they serve great alligator there and a drink called gator juice is very yummy. During happy hour weekdays they have Samuel Adams on tap for $2 or $1 a pint. Killer deal either way. I think they are the only place in the county with Samuel Adams on tap. The restraunt is on pilings over the lake and there is a beach outside with a vollyball net.
