I went out to Monhegan Island a few years ago in the summertime. There’s a cool ferry to take you there and even the summer, the weather out there was pretty nice – there was an incerdible heat wave on the mainland, but it wasn’t too hot on the island. There’s not a whole lot to do in the town, but the hiking trails were fun. There were too many people though, so it was hard to get away from people.

Monhegan Island
is heaven on earth, to me. A chunk of rock with dramatic cliffs, deep, mysterious woods, a charming village of authentic people, nothing cute. No cars allowed. 3 or 4 lovely hotels, open only in the summer. Sweet roses, picket fences, twisted apple trees, fishermen’s gear on the lawns, crashing surf, crusty Mainers year-round residents. Salt and pine and peregrine falcons. My favorite place in all the world. Lily
