this Malapascua trip was my bday treat.. I’ve never been to place so hard to go to.. It took us 3 hours to get here, but as we landed in this small island – i was in AWE.. there were only few people, mostly foreigners.. it felt like we were foreigners in our country. I celebrated my bday with my closest friends. Such a great experience!

I went there with my fiance some 3 years ago and I was surprised that the place looked like a little boracay (at least in shape! :) They got white sandy beaches but not quite well-maintained, I didn’t realize I was already swimming with a school of jelly fish! Food was excellent, most resorts served fresh catch..

Best food I’ve had in the Philippines. Hippocampus had really good green curry.

Beach is nice but marred by washed up coral from old dynamite fishing.

Weather was windy in August, but not bad considering August is the rainy season in most of the Philippines. Windy weather made diving difficult (one diving boat broke in the waves).

I stayed at one of the diving places on the island, and it was bloody heaven. They arranged everything for me. It was so nice not to be woken up in the morning by traffic, the peace and quiet was lovely!

Like all tourist spots, locals get first priority. Let’s say, a full-body massage for P500. But when these vendors see (unaccompanied) foreigners, you wouldn’t believe the inflation! And foreigners will bite P1K for a full-body massage!

My officemates and I went to Malapascua for a much-needed stress-buster. Along the way, some Koreans at the back part of the bus got a little nervous. Then one brave woman went up to us and introduced herself. She asked if we were going to Malapascua. Seeing that they’re all Koreans, we let them tag along. Lucky for them! They saved about P3,000 on lodging alone, and the place where they were planning to stay didn’t have electricity 24/7. The place we got wasn’t beachside, but we were comfortable.

Long story short, we made friends with the Koreans, and they were very thankful that we were there with them. Malapascua can really make memories!

circled the whole island one afternoon. loved the back beaches of the fisherfolks than the tourist-infested beach front resorts. the cemetery facing the ocean is an exception though. ging-ging’s has the best fish curry. ever.

Unfortunate Christmas  — 2 years ago

According to the forums I’ve been haunting while researching for places to go, Cebu’s best beaches are either in Bantayan or Malapascua. I’m going to Cebu in 2 weeks, but due to time constraints, I won’t be able to make it to Malapascua.

I was considering schedule another Cebu trip focusing solely on Malapascua later this year, but a Cebuano’s words made me reconsider and wait till next year.

Malapascua, which meaning “Unfortunate Christmas,” does live up to its name. While the sea doesn’t take everybody that travels there around Christmas, the best time to go there is between March – May. Okaaay.

A friend of mine told me that this Island was like Boracay 10 years ago. Didn’t know that Boracay was something beautiful and peaceful 10 years ago.
