Way back... by willisca

Growing up in Wilmington was just that. I guess when you grow up in just one place, you never really have much to compare it to. I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil now and when I tell people I am from Wilmington, which has but 12,000 folks, they give me a look of grief, like “poor fucker”. Whatever, its not like I had a choice or anything.

My best days were spent with friends, looking to do something and not catching heat for it. Road trips and bonfires were always number one on my list. Sounds “country” and I guess it is, but it was what we had to do. I wonder if I would like my kids to grow up there or at least live there someday. I know they would be safer than they are here in SP, but I don’t know I would want them to think the rest of the world was like that. I guess I have this memory of Wilmington that could only be compared to the towns of Andy Griffith and that one from the Trueman Show.

Anyway, I like to visit my family and see old friends in Wilmington. I wouldn’t suggest it as a tourist place, but if you want to spend some time with the locals, its not too bad.

Well, i guess Wilmington is a good place to grow up. It has a few things to do especially for teens, and college students. The community is fairly decent. it is just like any mid-size town.

Wilmington - a wonderful escape from California sprawl by hoddrofnir

Ok, first to clear the air. This was a work trip, and I have heard so many negative reviews from others who had taken the trip that I didn’t have the highest expectations. In fact I have put off taking this trip for along, long time.

Now that that’s out of the way…EVERYBODYWHOLIVES IN CALIFORNIANEEDS TO SPEND A WEEK IN A TOWNLIKETHIS. There is something about leaving the traffic, congestion, frustration, and visible air behind for a while and spend a little time away that is totally refreshing and may even be enough to re-instill a person’s belief that most people are nice, road-rage is abnormal and (this one may be 909 specific) not everybody has to fit into the Barbie-and-Ken-look-I-shop at-Victoria-Gardens mold.
