Nafplion

Usually you go to Greece to enjoy the nature and avoid the cities. Nafplio is an exception to the rule. After Greece achieved independence, this was briefly the capital. Unlike modern Greek cities with their cinderblock buildings, Nafplio has charming neoclassical architecture and an attractive, low-key plaka. It’s situated on a nice cove and dominated by a hillside fort. If you walk to the top, the view is amazing… but you better be in shape.

We went to Nafplio and stayed at Pension Mariana, a cute place with breakfast included, up on a cliffside, overlooking town. they serve the best yougurt and marmalade. yum. I recommend Nafplio as a good base for visiting Mycanae and Epidavros, both fairly close by…and, go see the castle on the cliff, great views! and a good butt workout on the way up those stairs!

Only an hours drive from the Theater of Epidaurus, and other interesting places, this beautiful little town is perfect for relaxing. My wife and I spent a week here on our honeymoon, and were able to unwind and enjoy ourselves a lot. We rented a car in Athens and drove to Nafplio.
