Nice susburb... by Ardillon86

I never really thought of what asuburb was. I’m from Houston.. and most of the time I hear suburb it means a nearby small community. Elgin is something different. It’s really it’s own entity. Nothing related or looking like Chicago. Very nice and quiet neighborhood. Looks like antique, yet new at the same time. It has recently been remodeled (most of the money coming from the Casino), which is a good thing for the local community.

If your from the south or the sunny areas of the U.S. Stay away from the winter months… A bit too cold for us (4o degrees is nice weather for locals; yet, I was freexing…)

e-town is excellent by elginite

Elgin is awesome: Beautiful historic architecture—residential, commercial, industrial, institutional. Great public library. Between the big city (Chicago) and the quiet countryside. Diverse population, with some great ethnic restaurants. A nice microbrewery in the historic downtown, which is probably one of the nicest downtowns in Illinois. Illinois’s best orchestra outside of Chicago. First-rate punk rock legacy. Huge forest preserves next to town.

Friendly People by rossta

I liked it, check it out if you are in the area, the casino has a great buffet. And Al Capone, yeah, Al Capone.

nice downtown by illinoiskid

elgin, once a former sleepy city on the fringes of chicagoland is back up and bustling again. a trip to downtown elgin will find you exploring the new library, a plaza that offers tribute to heroes who died saving a man from the fox river, a civic center featuring the lovely Hemmens Auditorium theater, some nice shops, and glorious views of the Fox River. the Fox River bike path runs through the heart of downtown and is highly recommended. the area around the Grand Victoria Riverboat Casino is also nice. elgin has two large parks, Wing Park and Lords Park and both are recommended. elgin also is fortunate to have 2 hospitals…Sherman and St. Joseph’s. the village has a good residential base (but the east side isn’t so hot)…and is rapidly expanding westward and will surely have 100,000 people by the 2010 census. its randall road and I-90 corridors are already bustling with retailers, hotels, major industrial and commerical buildings. good day trip indeed!
