I remember as a kid getting the special treat of visiting McDonald’s and then having the awesome tasks of climbing all those stairs to see the lion.

La Butte du Lion
If you go to Waterloo you must see la Butte du Lion…it’s a huge hill with a giant Lion statue on top. If you are really brave you can roll down the hill. Yummy frites can also be found in Waterloo, as well as my old school St. John’s.
Waterloo even has its own webpage.

A rumor about this place
Well I almost moved into a house across from the Butte du Lion until my parents found out that 600-something French soldiers were buried beneath where the Barn is/was near the house. Creepy.

Only place I enjoyed in Belgium
It’s not worth a trip out of your way, but if you happen to be on the road between Brussels and Paris, you ought to stop for 30 minutes and see the museum and battle field. Amazing to think what a turning place this was in European history.

Serious students only
If you’re a student of Napoleonic history, Waterloo is the place to go. However, if you only have a passing familiarity with the Battle of Waterloo, you’re better off reading a book about it. The exhibit is a 1950s diorama in a bad state of repair, the movie they show is interesting but not really insightful, and the best part of the area would be climbing the commemorative mount for its magnificent view. The village of Waterloo is a great place to live, apparently, with a fairly large expat community, but it really doesn’t offer a lot for passing tourists.
