Yaxchilan

If you are into Mayan ruins, it is definitely worth it to make a trip to Yaxchilan and Bonampak. I went as part of a trip that took me from Palenque, to the two sites, and then across the border with Guatemala to Flores (the jumping off point for visiting Tikal). A generous breakfast and lunch were included. The whole trip was pricey (about $100), but from it was worth it to see some calmer, less touristic sites. The frescoes at Bonampak are stunning. As for Yaxchilan, you need to ride in a lancha for about 40 minutes along a river to arrive. The site is located in dense, seething jungle. When I went, there were about 10 other people at the whole site. Compared to the tour group crush at Palenque, it was such an intimate experience.
