A review of this place: Trying to find the silver lining
I’ve been stationed here for almost 2 years now and its by far the oddest list town I’ve seen. First its set on a high plain with an elevation of about 4200 ft. with few trees and no hills or mountains. So all the wind from the mountains three hours west has a free path across the plains. Let me tell you this is the WINDYEST place you will ever be. Its terrible, and if I ever stop anywhere this windy again I will just pack up my crap and leave. The flightline is terrible when the wind blows especially in the winter. Really I wonder why settlers would stop here, its dry, flat, windy, brown, and overall ugly (except at sunrise and sunset). Its surrounded by cow fields so the smell is pretty constant and there are trains for miles which if you live near can be very loud. As for scenery, when I first came into town I thought I saw a tall building on the horizon but it was just a grain elevator and thats all there is for a skyline.
Its southern but not all that hospitable, its full of odd blue laws and prohibitions yet crime is a problem with some rediculous % of the pop in gangs. Business is slow with Wal Mart being the primary shoping center. There is a Committee of 50 which overseas the town and what comes in and out, whom no small number of rumors surround. It has an oddly wealthy side of town which is in sharp contrast to the rest of the town which looks shabby, rundown and dusty, and in some ways seems impoverished. When I first got here I would drive through neighborhoods with my family looking for a house to rent and in most cases we would’nt even stop or slow down. Where those people get this money from is beyond me because as I said business is slow here and there only around 30-35,000 people i believe (one of the committee of 50 rumors explains this). Anyway it does try hard, it has a zoo that my son loves, a few parks, and if religion is your thing you’re in luck there are churches everywhere. There are a few small eateries which are nice, Pop’s Diner is around the corner from my house and the BBQ is great and Leal’s and the other Mexican restaurants are worth trying. It has a nice small town feel to it for awhile but it fades as your frustration with the rest grows. There are only a few drinking establishments and you have to know which gas stations sell beer because liquor licenses are controlled (committee of 50 rumor). Also the ages 18-22 seems to be the magical number for women here after that they balloon up rapidly in size so get em early. Many people like it here and some do retire from the base here as well so it can’t be all that bad. I think you just have to get out and into the community more that other places.
As someone who has spent a little time here though my advice is to get out of town. Ruidoso is a few hours away along with Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, Taos, and many other mountainous places with things to do and see. The state isn’t bad but this town is a hard place to come to live.

A review of this place: A whole lotta nothin'
There is nothing, I repeat, nothing, to do in this town. There are a million other places on Earth that I’d rather be.

I was born here
but of course, I don’t remember anything about the place. We moved to Minnesota shortly after I was born. I think it would be neat to check it out now that I’m an adult.

My ex-bf grew up in Clovis, and we went to visit his family. Once. Pentecostals for days in that city, bless their hearts. Don’t expect to find a lot to eat if you’re vegetarian, unless you like peanuts.
