Worth visiting!
This place is worth it only if you already live near
I think it’s named after a General who fought the Creek and Seminole with a high degree of success. He is also known for having tricked Osceola into coming to parley, under a flag of truce, and then taking him captive, dragging him to Fort Moultrie, North Carolina, where Osceola died under suspicious circumstances.
There is a pulp plant which pollutes the surrounding country’s air and water. The stench can sometimes carry for miles. It belongs to Rayonnier. No one seems to want to or be able to oppose the corporate interests.
A nurse at one of the local hospitals told us about the high cancer rates in Jesup. But it seems the local folk accept the trade-off of jobs in favour of cancer.
Still, the place stinks, and the people keep dying slowly and prematurely. The package stores abound.
See my entry on Brownstown.
