It’s free, messes up your hair (if you’re out on deck), and the wind is like WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It’s a great feeling.

Best reason to visit: it’s FREE. Yes, free. No fine print. FREE.

It’s half hour each way. On the way to Staten Island you get a great view of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. On the way back, the BEST view of Manhattan.

Did I mention it’s free? Go!

Why I recommend this place to visitors  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

If want to see the Statue of Liberty, Governor’s Island, Ellis Island, Downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn, miscellaneous bridges, and New Jersey power plants from afar, or just want to get the hell off of Staten Island, the ferry can do that.

A review of this place: Free, with a great view  — 1 year ago

This is definitely something to do on your first day in Manhattan. Free, it gives quite a nice view of the harbour and the Statue of Liberty. I never actually got off on Staten Island, though there are probably things to see there as well.

The first time I went to this place  — 2 years ago

    Worth visiting!

I lived in NYC for 8 years before I took the ferry to a friend’s house in Saint George. I kept making excuses for not visiting—I’m a Mahattanite, and I rarely leave my own little island—but the ferry is a wonderful trip. The views of the harbor and islands are amazing. It’s also a great way to see the sunset…

i live on staten island and its pretty boring but this boat ride takes you back and forth from manhattan to staten island. most international people call it the “free ferry” because it is free and its the closest picture you can get of the statue of liberty.

In addition to serving as public transport for commuters, the free ferry between lower Manhattan and Staten Island is a great way to see New York, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from the water without having to pay for the pricey tourist ferry to Liberty and Ellis islands. The ride is about half an hour each way.
