What a surprise! by januaryf

I was really surprised by Blarney Castle. I was expecting a tourist trap, but it was actually a really nice place!

My favorite part was the land around it…faerie glens, witches’ kitchens, druid circles, etc.

When a castle becomes a tourist trap by gharding

I was so disappointed by this place. The castle was cool, but not cool enough to overpower the stench of greedy tourism. I doubt the builders of Blarney Castle ever planned on the gift shop addition.

I highly recommend Blarney Castle for both the young and old. The castle itself is a lot of fun to explore. I thought it would be a touristy sight with not much to it besides the legend of the Blarney Stone, but I actually learned a bit of history while there. The grounds are also phenomenal. There’s the wishing steps, the Blarney witch, beautiful trees and other plants, and even caves. I had a great time walking around the forests.

It was a drizzly day but honestly it added a charm to it. The castle was pretty cool. It was just ruins inside, there was little restoration to rooms unlike some castles around Ireland. You get to explore freely around and climb up along the stairs. The history about it seemed a little far fetched and silly, but hey they say it happened. I kissed the Blarney stone for a like a second but they pulled me up really fast. It’s really awkward trying to kiss it since your upside down, but for some reason it didn’t seem all that dangerous. There are people holding you and metal bars underneath. The rest of the castle however was really neat and it was quite a climb to the top. Since it was rainy it was slippery, dress for good traction if it’s moist out. The grounds around the castle are straight out of a storybook. There’s caves and stone formations here and there as well as a variety of weird plants. The one that stuck out to me most is they had bamboo growing. Weird.

It was one of my favorite castles there, worth seeing.

I went last week- the weather was beautiful and there were no lines. You had to pay to get in, but what do you expect?
