Woods & Lots of Fresh Water

Like Most of Northern Michigan Cheboygan is an econmically depressed area, however haveing said that there are a lot of nice things to see and do here. Cheboygan is a gateway to the more touristy and well known area of Mackinaw (Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island, then Mackinaw bridge) and of course Mackinaw Fudge, all about 15 minutes from Cheboygan. There are a lot of things for tourists to do in & closer to Cheboygan though. The Cheboygan area has some of the largest inland lakes in the state, the town is also on the Straits of Mackinaw (this is where Lake Michigan flows into Lake Huron, and coincidently the Mackinaw Bridge (5 mile long suspension bridge) spans the gap. So anyway there is no lack of water here and if you are into water sports, i.e. boating, sailing, fishing, swimming (there are some nice beaches here (I recommend Dunkan Bay), or even scuba diving ship wrecks in the Straits, this is a good place for it. Other activities would include hiking or hunting in the extensive woods of the area (there is a lot of public (State) land in the area, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling (is that a word?). If you go to a restaurant in the area look for fresh whitefish, its the best food we have up here.
