sadly, no longer open by alykat
I visited the City Museum about a year and a half ago, and I was really impressed, particularly in the main “History of D.C.” exhibit room, with how they managed to artfully present a ton of information in a compact space. The main exhibit room had a huge aerial photo of D.C. on the floor, and you’d often see small groups of people crouched down, pointing out homes and workplaces and commuter routes.
The museum charged an admission fee to see the exhibits, unlike many of the other museums in the area, and this may have played a part in the museum’s failure. It closed to the public in November 2004, but may reopen at some later date.
