A real dive, they don't make 'em like this anymore — 3 years ago
Worth visiting!
In the 1950’s Jacques was the only gay bar in Boston allowing unescorted females inside the door. Most ‘gay’ establishments were mob owned, Jacques being no exception. Staid and stuffy Bostonian’s ‘gay scene’ was a close kept secret EXCEPT Jacques always attracted an outlandish clientele. Due to the rowdy, flamboyant (drunken) crowd; and the bar’s small size, Jacques’ patron’s spilt onto the sidewalks of the Toni Bay Village neighborhood where it’s located MUCH to the dismay of the Neighborhood Association (they spent years trying to close it down but the owner’s connections proved more resilient and politically savvy). In the 1980’s the homeowner’s prevailed demanding and getting a midnight close time for the bar. It’s a dive like no other dive, cracked mirrors, chipped glasses, and a waitress who will cover for good tippers on the bar’s phone.
