A tip I have about this place  — 1 month ago

    Worth visiting!

If you rent a cabin in Custer SP you may be able to see entire herd of bison come and graze right in front of your cabin! They are abundant in this park. We also saw lots of mule deer and some antelope, wild burros—but the thing that filled me with awe, again and again, was seeing the bison in a natural environment like they must have been hundreds of years ago. Very pleasant weather in August 2007.

Why I recommend this place to visitors  — 1 year ago

It’s all about the wildlife! My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon here last May and had a blast. There was an abundance of buffalo, antelope, and we even seen a bunch of wild donkeys! You might want to consider traveling the park in the spring before the tourist rush begins. The weather was great when we went and there were very few people on the road, so no RV’s blocking the beautiful view. Definitely worth visiting if you appreciate wildlife.

SUCH a neat place to visit. Magnificent views, the wildlife is great. I recommend the Needles, and just walking around.

You could spend a week just wandering around in this MASSIVE park. You’ll see lots of Bison (aka Buffallo), Wild Burros, Deer, Elk, and lots of others. A delightful mix of scenery.

Sylvan Lake is amazing, and photogenic.

Wildlife at its Best  — 2 years ago

Custer State Park is a fun spot to visit. Buffalo and other animal’s pretty much just run free without any fencing. There’s some, but for the most part you can just ride right on through and see a lot of wildlife. When I went Buffalo were crossing the road, and we had a Donkey chase the car and try to bite our wheel, luckily it didn’t. Still pretty fun to do, great way to see Buffalo up close.

Be sure to drive the Wildlife Loop. If you have time, drive on both sides of The Needles—I only had time for the one side, so I went through the tunnels on Needles Highway, but evidently I missed an interesting rock bridge on the other side.

I had no idea that I would be up so high—at 7,242 feet, Harney Peak is the highest point between the Rockies and the Alps.
