as neumos is to moe, jules mae's is to jules mae's

Jules Mae’s was once the oldest continuously running bar in all of Seattle. I think it opened in Eighteen Seventy Something. I have no idea which bar stole the “oldest” honor when Jules Mae’s closed down as a crazy historical dive and turned into a vendor of stained glass for yuppie homes. At the time I was playing in a honky tonk band with a regular gig at JM, and the irony of the situation was that the proprieter stealing the venue away was a villian in at least one of our songs; she was one of the band leader’s several ex-wives. Country songs are about the real life, folks.

It’s nice that Jules Mae’s has reopened as a bar again, but the ornate woodwork of the physical bar is all that remains of the original old-school charm. That’s okay too, the refurbished bar has live music again and is still surrounded by decidedly unrefurbished Georgetown, and that is just alright.

A tip I have about this place

Tip one: Jules Maes offers a choice of french fries, mashed potatoes or TATER TOTS with their burgers and sandwiches. Tater tots! When was the last time you had a tater tot? I had some on Saturday! At Jules Maes!

Tip two: If you go see a show here during the winter, bring your mittens. It’s FREEZING in the back room and the only way to warm it up is to dance dance dance.
