But anyway, we spent a week or so on Alderney back in 1974. We rented a house and maybe a car (I can’t remember). Walked all over the island. I remember low bushes in windswept hillsides that smelled like coconut. Combed the beaches for shells which I still have – tiny yellow snail shells. Someone rented ponies and we got to take a ride on them. A naval destroyer was docked there and we got a tour of it too (it helped that Dad was military and we were teenage girls). A lovely place. The locals then called it an island with 13 pubs on it. I would go again.
