Whittier

My favorite place to kill time while waiting for the ferry is the gift shop (I think it’s Sound Ideas Gallery & Gifts), which is right next to the Alaska Marine Highway ferry dock. They have homemade fudge and it is DELICIOUS.

If you go by car, make sure to stop at Portage Glacier on the other side of the tunnel, although the glacier has retreated up the mountain since my childhood. There is an interesting exhibit at the visitor’s center, and a good place for kids.

What I think is really interesting is that there seems to be only one building to house all of Whittier’s residents. Is this one building really where everyone in Whittier lives?? edit….I guess so.

There are a ton of glaciers and a few trails and a small museum. The tunnel in and out of Whittier is apparently the longest highway tunnel. Other than that, there’s really not much.

Take the train.

It’s not much, but the history is interesting. There’s a neat hike up in the mountains just outside of town.

We took the train down from Anchorage to take a cruise on the Prince William Sound. The tight train/cruise/train schedule didn’t leave much time to ‘see’ the town, but it didn’t look like there was much there other than the stuff supporting the cruises.
