One Stop in Ireland

Pronounced “cove”, this town temporarily (until 1922, that is) renamed itself Queenstown to commemorate a visit by Queen Victoria in 1849. This is also the place where the Titanic had its final port of call, 11 April 1912.

The initial drive in (from Cork) left my sister and I rather unimpressed, and we were beginning to doubt the wisdom of making a stop when we came around the bend and saw St. Colman’s Cathedral, a HUGE neo-Gothic building nestled in among the homes that overlook Cork harbour.

Closer to the harbour is also a Lusitania memorial; it cracked me up to see that someone had put a cig butt in the mouth of one statue. Must be similar to the prank of putting the traffic cone on the statue outside Glasgow’s GOMA.
