The worst place I have ever been.......
I only made two stops in this town and at both places people basically asked me to buy them food. One was so drunk he did not remember asking. I was traveling alone with a child under 2 late at night just trying to get something to eat. Pretty scary. Also there was something very funny about the roads. There was a lot of construction going on. The whole city seemed dirty.

The first time I went to this place
I went to Gallup, NM early Nov ‘07 because my boyfriend, Eric moved there. He had only been there for about 5 days when I hopped a train from Topeka Kansas and went out to see him. It was funny because he didn’t even believe that I was really on the train until I got to Raton and called him.
Overall my trip to Gallup was pleasant even though I did get very sick for a few days. Eric had a motorcycle, so we went cruising around the town and country which was beautiful but often chilly. We visited McGaffey forest, went rock climbing at Mentmore, and visited some friends on one of the Indian reservations. One thing I wish I would have done was to have stopped and stayed at the El Rancho hotel, the hotel of the movie stars.

How this place changed my life
I was born and raised in Gallup. All of my life, all I (and everyone I grew up with) wanted to do was get the hell out of there.
I no longer live there, but I wish I did. There are a lot of not so great things about it, but it is always going to be home.
Moving away from Gallup has taught me that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Every city has their pros and cons.

got a ticket
Got pulled over by a cop in Gallup. Coolest cop that ever pulled me over. I was going bout 30 mph over the limit. He got my info and asked what my hurry was. Told him I was headn to Los Angeles. He told me to have a nice trip and wished me luck. Let me go, free of charge. Just wish the cops were like that here in St. Louis.

Real Cool Hotel
The El Rancho Hotel in Gallop was a real cool place to stay. Apparently the hotel is famous for having so many famous people as guests. Each guest room is named after a person who has stayed in that room of the hotel. We stayed in Virginia Mayo’s suite. Small but cozy. I remember having a great time in the bar drinking margaritas. And I think the food was good too. But I loved the look of the place, very antique and rustic. I loved it.
