Why I recommend this place to visitors

Incredibly beautiful! The Grand Canyon has nothing on the beauty and history of Canyon de Chelly. This really is a must-see for geology lover, history nuts, and just regular tourists, alike. Fantastic colors, entire civilizations build into the canyon walls, the place is simply amazing.

Travel tip: visit during the fall/winter months. There aren’t as many other tourists and the colors really stand out if there is snow on the ground. Also, The heat is unbelievable in the summer.

The first time I went to this place

This place has it all – incredible scenery, ancient ruins and current day Navajo. It has left a yearning in me… Can’t wait to go back and spend a few days in the canyon itself, and hopefully see a special dog friend again in the Cottonwood Campground.

Why I recommend this place to visitors

My family visited here in Aug. 1991. We rented campers in Salt Lake City and toured the four corners areas, which is a highly recommenable way to see this unique and quietly beautiful part of our country. We stayed in quite a few campgrounds, but to me none to compare to Canyon De Chelly. We stayed at a campground on the reservation which most of this area is. It was run by a very nice Native man who had a heated outdoor shower which added to the ambiance and flavor of this wild and natural area. We walked the trail to the canyon view and were treated to the breath-taking landscape which I thought was more beautiful than the very commercial and crowded Grand Canyon. The rocks and cliffs have such force and personality with an array of colors that would keep and artist happy forever. It was a very spiritual and reverent place where you could really admire nature in all it’s glory.
