I was born here. Moved away before I was even a year old, so naturally I can’t recall anything. I must go back! It calls to me!

#3 largest city in B.C., maybe #1 weirdest city in B.C.? by mackro

Opinions about Nanaimo range from coziness to full-on fear. There’s certainly a sense that Nanaimo is a city best experienced if you know someone who lives in the very scenic, beautiful outskirts. These days, the central part of town is quaint, but can be seen as a bit homely and unsettling at night, as it has fallen on some hard times in the past decade.

That isn’t to say that the city should be avoided! Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself in a quiet town with isolated strange characters at night. It’s a safe place all ‘round. It’s a cousin to cities like Aberdeen, Spokane, and Olympia in that respect… there are many interesting great things to be seen, but can unfortunately be easily overlooked if you’re just passing through and just get the “creepy” impression from the central part of town.

Nanaimo - The Hub city by Funkmonkey

Great place to smoke crack!! Otherwise the best idea is to get out of the city and explore the rivers, beaches and forests in the surrounding areas.
